SMB1 vs SMB3 as best-selling game of all time

[edit]

I have a 2000 edition of the Guiness Book of World Records that calls SMB3 the best-selling game of all time - what edition says SMB1 is? Andre (talk) 03:45, Oct 11, 2004 (UTC)

Apprently the newest ones. I provided a link to the GBoWR's site that claims SMB1 to be the current victor, so, unless the 2005 edtion still says SMB3 and I'm wrong, I'd assume that's the correct game. Shadow Hog 03:51, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Sorry, where's the link? Andre (talk) 03:52, Oct 11, 2004 (UTC)
Here. Alternatively (though not GBoWR, but still from Nintendo themselves), this also covers the topic.
Though, reading the latter I did notice it saying that SMB3 is the greatest-selling game not bundled with hardware... I might edit my edit to reflect that. Shadow Hog 04:03, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Ah, I see. I think such an edit would be useful. Anyway, thanks for clearing that up. Andre (talk) 04:24, Oct 11, 2004 (UTC)
You're welcome, and such an edit has already been made. :) Shadow Hog 04:26, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Mobius - my usual garbage

[edit]

Just wanted to say thanks again for talking things through on the Mobius page. Didn't want to clutter the talk page with off-topic stuff. Don't worry about being harsh - it seems everyone on the Wikipedia has a knife tucked into their boot, just in case :P Have a nice day (*random note*: Homsar is indeed utter pwnage!) -Erolos 19:55, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

DS Weight

[edit]

Do know just how much 275g is? That's a substantial amount of weight, and even if the stylus for the DS was made out of lead, I doubt it could weigh that much. For comparison, the PSP weights about 500g, and the GBA SP is 143g. The given weight in the specifications is 275g for the entire unit including battery. Therefore, I've reverted your edit. Sockatume 04:23, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I suppose, in a fit of tiredness, I wasn't thinking clearly. Whatever, if it's more accurate now, then that's all that matters.
That said, I really need to go over grams. I always thought they were light... --Shadow Hog 05:15, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)
They're one of those annoying units, like millilitres, which seem smaller than they actually are. Especially when there are a lot of them. I usually make a point of thinking of them as fractions of a kilo. Worth a shot, eh? Sockatume 05:58, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Just a note

[edit]

I know the Tandy 400 era didn't have subject lines, but I was trying to prove a point, that being that correlation, as has been noted, doesn't always equal causation, so to speak. (Or just because an email is named a certain way doesn't mean it has anything to do with the subject line of the email itself. Or whatever.) --TheNintenGenius 23:10, 23 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, well, I knew your point, for the most part. I was thinking along the lines of "the Lappy displays the ACTUAL e-mail header, while the menu shows TBC's funny nickname for it". I think that's what you're trying to say. :) --Shadow Hog 23:17, 23 Jan 2005 (UTC)

GCOTW

[edit]

I'm giving you this message because you have been active on Gaming Collaboration of the week in the past. The collaboration had a bit of a hiatus, but it's now active again. A new article will be chosen this Sunday. It would be greatly appreciated if you visited the page to vote and/or make new nominations and worked on next week's GCOTW. Thanks. --Slowking Man 08:08, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)

Abbreviation italics

[edit]

Hi, I noticed you italicized the abbreviations of game titles on Half-Life. I thought that even though the titles would normally be italicized, initialism-style abbreviations of those titles should not be (The Lord of the Rings yet LotR). But that's just my gut reaction; I don't recall seeing rules for this in style guides. Google revealed little this subject. Do you have a guide that has a rule or example for this? It might be a good addition to Wikipedia:Manual of Style (titles). --Mrwojo 23:01, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

No real guide. I'm just going by what I've seen done on professional websites, like GameSpot, or magazines, like Electronic Gaming Monthly. There, they italicize abbreviations. Thus, I've assumed it's correct grammar to italicize abbreviations too, since it's still a game's name, just abbreviated.
That said, I'll go ahead and add it to the aforementioned article. --Shadow Hog 02:56, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

"Vortigaunt" vs. "Alien Slave" (opinion)

[edit]

I think the main reason that "Alien Slave" was used so extensively in the Vortigaunt article was because the creature didn't really have a name in the original Half-Life. IIRC, it was simply known as the alien slave and 'Vortigaunt' was invented later for Half-Life 2.

I have no particular heartburn with all instances of "alien slave" being removed from the article, but perhaps a note should be inserted about the backfill of the name (if I'm right about it). -DynSkeet 16:37, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Okay. I'll make note of it on there. I just thought (and still think) the name was too generic, but if it was what it was called for most of the time... --Shadow Hog 01:18, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I'm not sure it was referred to at all in the first game, but that's how it was referred to in the community. Most likely it was the name of the model found in the SDK, and the name stuck rather than people inventing something bizarre like "Vortigaunt". :) I know I scratched my head when I heard the first reference to the name in Half-Life 2. -DynSkeet 13:02, Apr 6, 2005 (UTC)
Upon going back and reading up a review in some "PC Accelerator" magazine I had lying around that reviewed Half-Life... yep, they were called "Vortigaunts" back in '98, too. Whatever that means... --Shadow Hog 05:04, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Half-life

[edit]

Shadow Hog, that was very considerate of you to make a compromise. I am a fan of both Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat. I believe CS is more popular because it was around longer than DoD. But, Valve Software did award DoD as the best Half-Life mod, over CS. It probably is best to have both linked. Thanks. --Major.T 02:23, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • No prob, seemed more logical than an edit war, anyway. :) --Shadow Hog 02:38, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Mega Man X names

[edit]

If you would like the English-version names first you will also need to change approximately every other character list for the series. Also if you are making a table of information I think it is a little premature, as there is a lot of information for each X-series boss (title, occupation, history, height/weight/speed/power, etc). --Boco XLVII 30 June 2005 20:41 (UTC)

A little premature? Maybe, but in a way it'd probably be easier to put it all in a table than it would these lengthy lists.
Then again, maybe we shouldn't even have a list; I mean, the article should be about the concept of Mavericks themselves, really. We can let the individual game topics (given that Mega Man X (game) is already started) cover it.
As for JPN vs. English, well, this is the ENGLISH Wikipedia, covering a concept and using the ENGLISH name for the articles, so it would make little sense for the JAPANESE names to come first. That's, like, very backwards. I agree they should be there for comparison, but this isn't the Japanese Wikipedia, so they shouldn't come first. If that means I have to change everything, so be it.
But anyway, I'll finish the table, and take it to Talk:Maverick (video game) afterward to be judged on. It's probably better than in private. --Shadow Hog 30 June 2005 20:48 (UTC)
Oh, I have no problems with changing everything if that's the consensus. I just don't want to be the one to do it ^_^;;
Can you think of a better place for an organised list? Or is it possible to transclude information so the same partial list can occur both on a full list and on a game's page? (this would also be useful for Robot Master which seems to suffer from the opposite problem as Maverick (video game) (which should also probably be moved because that name is silly) - too much list and not enough general information). --Boco XLVII 30 June 2005 20:56 (UTC)
I dunno. List of Mavericks (Mega Man X), mayhaps? We can go into more detail about them in a more fully-fledged list. --Shadow Hog 30 June 2005 21:03 (UTC)

Edit summaries

[edit]

Hi, I've never interacted with you before, but I've got Sonic the Hedgehog on my watchlist and I just wanted to drop you a note. Looking at your list of edit summaries[1], there are some summaries that aren't helpful to people browsing their watchlist, and might be viewed as incivility. For example, (*sigh* What is it you are trying to accomplish here?) Most likely the anon who made the previous change will never see that summary, but people who are looking at their watchlist won't know what change you made. Why not just put fixed pictures? Keeping the edit summaries factual rather than holding a discussion there will benefit everyone. -- Norvy (talk) 8 July 2005 15:06 (UTC)

I understand this is a late reply, but I've taken what you said and made an attempt to apply it to my editing habits. Thanks for the comment, one way or another. --Shadow Hog 18:38, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Super Mario Bros. 3

[edit]

What is this "concrete proof" you're talking about? And why do you believe the game was released before 1990 in Japan? I have a feeling that the original sentence wasn't invented. Marcus2 14:17, 24 Jul 2005 (UTC)

See Talk:Super Mario Bros. 3. We've already posted several links, including Nintendo's very own website, that say 1988, and frankly, I don't think Nintendo themselves are going to forget when they released such a popular game. --Shadow Hog 17:43, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Bug, etc

[edit]

Could you please provide more information on the "Bug" game and other earlier titles in the platform game article, thanks. Shawnc 03:32, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'll see what I can do. --Shadow Hog 17:26, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Quake

[edit]

N.B - I cleaned this up a little so I could read and make sense of it more ;-) --Irixman 02:37, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to check re. your revision on my changes of the Quake article. Did you mean the Silicon Graphics platform itself was not noteworthy? Silicon Graphics was the company that invented OpenGL. The Quake series is one of the few mass-market game series that was ported to the MIPS processor.

I resubmitted my changes, because I feel it is indeed notable. I am new here, and just wanted to let you know that I made those changes. Thanks :-)

They may have made OpenGL, but that box was for official ports only, and I don't think anyone officially ported Quake to that. So, while I understand you think it's noteworthy, I... don't, unless you can sufficiently prove to me that that's not just homebrew. Which is where this is getting mentioned right now. After all, if we listed all the platforms that DOOM was ported to unofficially, we'd be listing pretty much any and every console capable of running a game, including but not limited to iPods. --Shadow Hog 02:14, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha, I understand now what you meant by homebrew -- first I thought you had meant SGI was homebrew...somehow. Worse than that, however -- I messed up :/ ID Software employees officially ported Doom to IRIX, not Quake. My bad. I have reverted my changes. Thanks for the catch! Irixman 02:27, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Come to think of it, can you elaborate the port for me? Silicon Graphics is an article on the company, and we don't port games to companies. I'm guessing this has something to do with the aforementioned processor, but even that's not an out-and-out platform. --Shadow Hog 02:19, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
To that point, Silicon Graphics is an article on the company, yes. And we also port games to platforms. But the computers designed by SGI are so radically different from any other out there (PC, Mac, etc.) that the platform has no other name :) --Irixman 02:37, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Article Revise

[edit]

sup fool:D when correcting an article, if it is either minor or full edit when going to the WatchList, a note will be at the side, about when it has been edited,... how do you do that?:P for example (cur) (last) 14:28, 22 November 2005 Shadow Hog (Saturn isn't listed, despite having some working (if with hefty sys reqs) emulators; adding a few) how did you do that? >x<ino 14:48, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

There should be a box labelled "Edit summary" above the "Save page/Show preview" buttons but below the place where you edit the page. Put summaries in there... --Shadow Hog 15:35, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
thankie
you mean like this?
:P
>x<ino 17:14, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, like that. --Shadow Hog 22:08, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

so...how do you revert? " (Reverted edits by 24.49.38.26 to last version by 86.137.147.30) " >x<ino 01:09, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Type it in manually, I'm afraid. --Shadow Hog 03:00, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sonic the Fighters

[edit]

I did not know that StF retained its original title in Sonic Gems. I will move the article to its Japanese title. WhisperToMe 01:02, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm requesting your opnion about this dispute. Lot of POV-Pushing, the article is currently blocked. --GroundZero 00:13, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you obsessed with bad grammer?

[edit]

Why are you so obsessed with making sure the Sonic Rush Talk page looks like gibberish? It does nothing to help the site. Even when I tried to translate it you edited back. Maybe the poster is one of your friends on gamefaqs? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jut (talkcontribs)

Because you're not allowed to modify other user's comments on Wikipedia. GameFAQs has absolutely nothing to do with this. --Shadow Hog 04:15, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Then what stops someone from spamming a talk page?
"modify other user's comments on 'Wikipedia" Wrong, maybe on your Homestar wiki but not here. But go ahead and become the Batman of the Talk pages, a Batman perhaps but a Batman is still a Batman. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Defs (talkcontribs)
If the comment is definite vandalism, unrelated to anything being posted (or the article), then it probably should be removed. But Alexie's comment was related to the article, so it should stay, unless he himself wants it removed. --Shadow Hog 21:34, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
His comment was vandalism to the English language. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.47.224.138 (talkcontribs)
That doesn't even make sense. --Shadow Hog 03:23, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Lets quote this again "It's normal, j00 goof. Also, I find it silly that the article is treating this game like it's for the Revolution or something. IT'S NOVEMBAH 11 OVAH HERE! 4 MORE DAYS. NOT LEIK A MONTH."
Seriously is your mind tranlating this to perfect english or something? A wag of the finger to you sir, your on notice! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.47.224.138 (talkcontribs)
You're being very ridiculous. You know that, right?
His grammar means nothing. It was a comment by a user on the article, and people kept removing it, so I kept putting it back. Simple as that. I'd appreciate it if you just left it alone and stop trying to mess with me. (And start signing your posts.) --Shadow Hog 04:26, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You sir are afraid of English, and that makes you a coward. A well deserved wag of the finger to you. (And stop signing your posts.) --Shadow Pog —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.47.224.138 (talkcontribs)
Again, English grammar has nothing to do with this. This is about comments, not grammar. --Shadow Hog 17:34, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Oh but it is, a yule-tide wag of the finger to you. Incase you didn't know your on notice! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sonic Hog (talkcontribs)

I will help you delete them:P >x<ino 20:09, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Delete what? Shadow this is going nowhere, if you want to just forget this mess so will I.Sonic Hog 20:09, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, let's just forgive and forget. Sorry. --Shadow Hog 21:39, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Master Chief as a Microsoft Mascot

[edit]

Whilst I generally agree that Master Chief isn't presneted or branded as a typical mascot, he does share some similarities with those benign characters (albiet MC is not really a benign kinda dude):

  • He is representitive of Microsoft's Xbox divison; i.e. its the first character most xbox gamers think of when the consoles are mentioned.
  • He has a wise-cracking side-kick in the hologram Cortana.
  • His costume is generally consistant in his appearances in games etc.
  • He has 'special powers' over his enemies from his suit and genetic alteration.
  • His character design and 'universe' was licenced out to Team Ninja for Dead or Alive 4 (albiet not MC himself) and to authors and a film studio etc.

Don't worry lol, I'm not gonna revert but perhaps when Bungie release more details on the next 'Halo' game, a greater perspective can be taken on his influence as a 'mascot' of sorts for M$

Help!

[edit]

Okay, this is weird, but I'm desperate. I'm trying to clean up the Shadow the Hedgehog article, but no one wants to use proper grammer except me. I've seen your occaisonal edit; and I think you know a lot about Sonic (you were right, it was Super Shadow-Super emeralds are only in S3&K). Anyway, I was wondering if you'd be willing to help out with the cleanup going on right now. Thanks, --69.145.122.209 03:40, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind, we got the assistance needed. I won't delete this just so you know why I edited your page. But if it bothers you to see it here, by all means. I don't need it for anything. --69.145.122.209 22:08, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bloopers!

[edit]

I made these bloopers for Game FAQs, to start a bloopers topic for Shadow the Hedgehog. They're already posted on that game's talk page, but, upon noticing that Shadow Hog is a member at Game FAQs, I decided to post them here as well. I'm simply too busy to put them there myself, so I'm putting them here so that somebody else can do it for me... Anyway, these are lampoonings of various cutscenes from Shadow the Hedgehog. Enjoy!

"I fail to see how this is important - it's designed for the first DOOM, so of course it's not going to replace much of DOOM II."   Not necessarily true.  Whenever an executable is based on version 1.666 (or later) of the original program, the Doom and Doom II behaviors are much more alike than they are different (see diagram here).  A similar phenomenon occurs, for example, with the Mac Classic version — drop the Doom II map file into the folder, and everything works except the music.    Xeriphas1994 18:44, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nobuo Uematsu DID do the theme for SatSR, because, why else would my MP3 say so? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 77.97.230.248 (talkcontribs).

Because whoever did that part for your MP3 was wrong. Simple as that. Unless you can find a better source saying otherwise...? --Shadow Hog 20:18, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, dude, you obviously haven't looked at the credits of the game. 77.97.230.248 06:58, 15 June 2007 (UTC)DanZieBoy[reply]

Yeah I have. It's not there either. In fact, according to the soundtrack CD:
"Seven Rings In Hand"
Music: Kenichi Tokoi
Lyrics: Runblebee

Vocals: Steve Conte
Chorus: Sizzle Ohtaka
Drums: Clint de Ganon
Bass: Will Lee
Electric Guitar: Oz Noy
Electric Guitar: Chewtaro Moritake
Recorded at Chung King Studio (New York) and Power House Studio (Tokyo)
Recorded and Mixed by Dave Darlington (Chung King Studio)
Assisted by Bevin Robinson (Chung King Studio)
Assisted by Takao Nakazato (Power House)
The person who supplied this (forum topic) even checked the credits, and STILL didn't see Uematsu. He didn't work on the game. Period. --Shadow Hog 11:34, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Deathtankzwei.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

This is an automated notice by FairuseBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --21:57, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello Shadow Hog! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to insure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 688 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Non-free rationale for File:Sxtreme-jadegully.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Sxtreme-jadegully.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 17:56, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Freedom Planet

[edit]

Thanks for updating the article on the delayed release date; I wouldn't have found out about it otherwise and been disappointed come June 30. I also thank you for placing the URL in the edit summary; for future reference, if you don't know the details of citation templates, you can just use tags like this and someone else can fix them later:

<ref>(insert URL here)</ref>

I know the basic syntax for references, I just couldn't be bothered to figure out what template was best appropriate at that immediate moment. :P --Shadow Hog (talk) 21:23, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
