The result of the debate was Keep category:Elections in the Republic of Ireland and delete category:Elections in Ireland. --Kbdank71 13:37, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Only one article in category, replaced by Category:Elections in Ireland --BaronLarf 01:00, Apr 16, 2005 (UTC)
Comment:Keep category:Elections in the Republic of Ireland and delete category:Elections in Ireland. — Instantnood08:04, Apr 16, 2005 (UTC)13:37, Apr 17, 2005 (UTC)- agree with Instantnood (checks temperature). Keep Category:Elections in the Republic of Ireland, delete category:Elections in Ireland. Grutness|hello? 08:01, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Comment Should we use full country names or their commonly-known shortforms? Most of our country categorisations are by the later, except in controversial and potentially confusing cases related to China and Congo?--Huaiwei 10:49, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- This case is controversial and potentially confusing. Ireland is the island, Republic of Ireland is the country and Northern Ireland is well... a seperate administrative region of the United Kingdom in the northern part of the island of Ireland. If we keep category:Elections in Ireland we should add articles on Northern Irish elections (see my vote / alternative suggestion below). -- Lochaber 12:04, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I see now. then its a Keep for category:Elections in the Republic of Ireland and a delete for category:Elections in Ireland.--Huaiwei 07:45, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

- Keep Category:Elections in the Republic of Ireland and migrate articles from Category:Elections in Ireland then delete (though I'm not sure that the Category:Political parties in Ireland should really be migrated b/c it has articles on NI parties). Alternatively I would support making Category:Elections in the Republic of Ireland a subcat of Category:Elections in Ireland, moving the Republic of Ireland specific articles into it and keeping Category:Political parties in Ireland as another subcat of Category:Elections in Ireland. -- Lochaber 12:04, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Comment There are two problems with Category:Elections in the Republic of Ireland: first, the articles on the elections in 1918 and 1921 cover the whole island as they led to the 1st and 2nd Dail; second is that the 26 counties only became a republic in the 1940s. --Henrygb 21:31, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Comment: How could this be solved in your opinion? Perhaps we can keep the pre-1940s entries at category:Elections in Ireland, or follow the way of presentation like "category:History of Ireland 1801-1922". — Instantnood 19:33, Apr 22, 2005 (UTC)
- Comment. Looks like the consensus is to delete category:Elections in Ireland and move the articles to Category:Elections in the Republic of Ireland. I've removed the cfd notice from Category:Elections in the Republic of Ireland, but there was no notice on category:Elections in Ireland, so I added it and will wait 3 days before making the move. --Kbdank71 17:50, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The result of the debate was rename --Kbdank71 18:11, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)
If it ain't famous, it ain't gonna have an article. Rename both to "Streets in...", ala Category:Streets in New York City. However, the parent is named Category:Roads in the United States. I'm unaware of any significant semantic difference between "street" and "road" so I don't really care which one it follows, just as long as the "famous" is dropped from these two. Postdlf 22:12, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Agree. The categories are useful, but the names are inappropriate. Drop "famous". -Willmcw 07:03, Apr 17, 2005 (UTC)

The result of the debate was speedy rename --Kbdank71 18:33, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Should be in plural form -> Category:Symptoms --Hooperbloob 13:45, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Shouldn't this now qualify for speedy renaming? RedWolf 06:39, Apr 20, 2005 (UTC)
- Yep. I'll add it to the Speedy rename section. --Kbdank71 18:33, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Same applies to Category:Sign (medicine). Let's change the whole lot. JFW | T@lk 16:51, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Note that this category does not have a CFD tag and thus is not officially nominated at this point. I would recommend something like Category:Medical signs to drop the parenthesis. Or maybe even Category:Medical indications although I'm not totally certain if sign == indication in medical terms. RedWolf 06:39, Apr 20, 2005 (UTC)
- Right you are, RedWolf. If someone wants to nominate Category:Sign (medicine), please feel free. --Kbdank71 18:33, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Re:Sub-Categories of Jewish people
[edit](An orphan. All the info is in List of Austrian Jews already.)
(An orphan, all the information is in List of British Jews already)
(An orphan. The information can be placed in Category:Jewish Dutch history.)
(An orphan. Information can be found in Category:Jewish Italian history.)
(An orphan. Information can be added into List of Jewish Romanians.)
(All the information is in List of Russian Jews which it duplicates.)
- Note: In fairness, there was a Vote to Delete [1] this sub-category when it was named "Category:Jewish Russian people" during Dec '04-Jan '05. The vote was to "Keep" and rename to "Category:Russian Jews". See Category talk:Russian Jews. However, the proliferation of "Jewish people" categories should allow re-thinking of the desirability of having so many duplicate sources on Wikipedia (part of the "List vs. Categ" debate in some way). Meaning, Russian Jews are already on their "List" and that list is part of Category:Lists of Jews, so they are in the categories already, and thus this category is a duplicate. IZAK 10:45, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- No vote. Mixed feelings on whether a category adds anything to a list here, but Russian Jewish culture and identity are distinct enough from Russian culture and identity as to constitute a viable category. -- Jmabel | Talk 05:24, Apr 16, 2005 (UTC)
(Orphan. Information to be added to Category:Jewish Spanish history.)
(Excessive repeat of all information to be found in Category:Lists of Jewish Americans and in List of Jewish Americans.)
(Excessive repeat of all information to be found in Category:Lists of Jewish Americans and in List of Jewish American artists.)
(Excessive repeat of all information to be found in Category:Lists of Jewish Americans and in List of Jewish American academics.)
(Excessive repeat of all information to be found in Category:Lists of Jewish Americans and in List of Jewish American musicians.)
(Excessive repeat of all information to be found in Category:Lists of Jewish Americans and in List of Jewish American academics.)
(Excessive repeat of all information to be found in Category:Lists of Jewish Americans and in List of Jewish American political figures.)
(Excessive repeat of all information to be found in Category:Lists of Jewish Americans and in List of Jewish American scientists.)
(Excessive repeat of all information to be found in Category:Lists of Jewish Americans and in List of Jewish American writers.)
- Delete all the above. The splintering of categories about Jewish people is getting out of hand, and must be tightened. Too many "frivolous categories" (as in "Frivolous lawsuits") for Jews are being created on Wikipedia. The above sub-categories about Jews (many of whom did not even care to be identified as such!) are proposed for deletion because they are either empty/orphans, or their contents can correctly be found in other similar categories Category:Lists of Jews of lists -- or of Category:Lists of Jewish Americans, or they are basically duplicates of "List" articles in categories by country such as Category:Jewish Spanish history that can include the information. IZAK 09:09, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Delete all. I would question the use of categorizing people by ethnicity, religion, etc., at all unless this was something the people themselves considered important (e.g., Benjamin Disraeli, Baruch Spinoza, but not Sarah Jessica Parker.) I am involved in similar issues related to Norwegian-Americans, and the list is sparse because at some point it becomes meaningless. Karl Rumsfeld may have Norwegian ancestry, but it isn't useful in any respect. --Leifern 11:04, 2005 Apr 15 (UTC)
- If the information is there in lists already, then delete' the categories. Grutness|hello? 11:07, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Delete all. --Kbdank71 13:12, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Delete all. Once I was a supporter of these, but changed my mind for several reasons. Mikkalai 14:57, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Delete all. Too narrow; next we'll have Category:20th century Jewish American writers, then Category:20th century Jewish American Science Fiction writers, then. And even though there are at least two dozen successful authors who would fit that last category, it's still too narrow. Jayjg (talk) 16:32, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Delete. Most of these categories are just the product of a fact that one person is both Jewish and [something else]. Little more is gained from these cross-sectional categories. Soon we'd have other modifiers for their sexual orientations, car ownership and whether eat gebrokts or not on Passover. JFW | T@lk 16:51, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Delete all of 'em. Good catch, IZAK.--Josiah 18:29, Apr 15, 2005 (UTC)
- Careful Delete It would be nice if a bot could walk back up through the hierarchy and relink the subjects to the first node that didn't have a Jewish association. For example people tagged as Category:Jewish American economists would then become Category:American economists --Hooperbloob 21:23, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Delete and follow Hooperbloob's suggestion for correction. Postdlf 22:12, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Delete all of the "Jewish American such-and-such profession" categories, if they are being used at the expense of including Jews with other Americans. Jewish culture in America is not that distinct from American culture in general. I certainly agree with Hooperbloob about making sure these are added to the corresponding "American such-and-such profession" categories. Perhaps retain Category:Jewish American: I suspect that if we get rid of it, it will simply resurface, anyway. -- Jmabel | Talk 05:29, Apr 16, 2005 (UTC)
