[edit]Thank you to whomever wrote the core of this article. That said, I don't think this was written by a native English speaker, or it was translated from (hopefully an open) source via an on-line translator.
Article is also missing information about Goodyear's time in Europe, mainly his time in England. If I ever come across a source that I can refernce properly I will come back and add it.
I think I have discovered the source of the odd English - the entire article is actually the 1891 Scientific American biography referenced at the end. While using the Scientific American article wouldn't appear to violate any copyrights, I think that the source should be noted upfront. I am new to Wikipedia and don't know what the policy is on attribution.
Cleanup
[edit]I'm going to try to clean up this article to help it conform to the biography guidelines and Template:Biography and have a greater degree of organization. Also, the content added at the end added by 203.84.136.6, although in the wrong place, seems to add meaningful content, so I'll try to incorporate that too. Dalstadt 04:24, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
Woburn, 1838
[edit]There appear to be two conflicting stories here: in the first Hayward was using sulfur, but applying no heat; in the second he was heating the stuff, but didn't know when to stop. I am, for the time being, deleting both and leaving the common elements. We need to find which was correct, and revert just that one story. Jd2718 18:19, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
- The answer is that the discovery was made in Woburn, but the process was perfected in Springfield. Goodyear received two patents for vulcanization. Markvs88 (talk) 17:54, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
Closeup
[edit]Why put the closeup when the original photo is already there?
Missing text
[edit]There seems to be a piece of text missing in the section "Marriage and early career". The phrase "time experimenting" begins part of the text but the first part of the paragraph seems to be missing. Presumably an earlier version of the text would show the missing piece but I don't know how to find it easily. -- GWH --
Clarification?
[edit]- "Although Goodyear is often credited with its invention, modern evidence has proven that the Mesoamericans used stabilized rubber for balls and other objects as early as 1600 BC.[2]
- Goodyear discovered the vulcanization process accidentally after five years of searching for a more stable rubber."
So did Goodyear steal it from the Native Americans or did he stumble across it like some bumbling idiot? Or both? The article is unclear. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.167.101.61 (talk) 11:17, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
Marriage?
[edit]"In August 1824 he married he is a boss." What does that mean? Rammer (talk) 02:05, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
