Arithmetic explanation
[edit]An edit on 17 Jan 2018 by an anonymous IPv6 address incorrectly "corrected" a statement about pipe capacity, basing the "correction" on the idea that pipe capacity scales linearly with diameter. In fact, pipe capacity scales with the cross-sectional area of the pipe. The cross-sectional area of a 72-inch pipe is about 3.1415*(72/2)^2 = 4071 sq. in., while that of a 36-inch pipe is 3.1415*(36/2)^2 = 1018 sq. in., exactly one quarter of the former number after accounting for rounding error. Thus, two 36-inch pipes have, as was correctly stated prior to the edit above, one half of the required capacity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kulp (talk • contribs) 15:13, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
