Which is the preferred category? This one, or Category:US naval ships? I would be inclined to go with this one, since in the U.S. the abbreviation used is usually U.S. not US (at least officially). Or is there some distinction here that I am missing? Aranel ("Sarah") 01:17, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Oh, and there's also Category:U.S. Navy ships. Aranel ("Sarah") 23:13, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I'm inclined to go for Category:U.S. Navy ships, because some of the subcats, like Category:U.S. Navy escort aircraft carriers, get unduly lengthy if spelled out, but then if some are abbreviated, all should be. Stan 23:26, 17 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I prefer Category:U.S. Navy ships. NeoJustin 22:29 Oct 23, 2004 (UTC)
Incidentally, some discussion is proceeding at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ships. Stan 00:16, 24 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Of course, officially it is "United States Navy". And this is the category that is currently in use—why change it over such a minor consideration as a few extra letters in the category name?Aranel ("Sarah") 23:59, 24 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Abbreviations are not preferable in category (or article) titles if it can be helped. As of the last I've seen in WP:CfD, it has been voted to retain United States Navy ships as the category name as opposed to U.S. Navy ships or Ships of the United States Navy.
