The BetterHistory script
[edit]Hiya Colin Hill, do you have any screenshots of what your BetterHistory script looks like? It sounds interesting, but I'd like to see it in action, if possible. Cheers, Talrias (t | e | c) 12:05, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Sure, here's a few I just took: An affected History page (look for the little link at the top), BetterHistory in action, and viewing the differences between revisions. The script also only affects the way Special:BetterHistory displays, since that page doesn't really exist. That way, people can try it out without messing up the rest of Wikipedia. -- Colin Hill ⁄ talk ▪ 01:52, Jun 27, 2005 (UTC)
Hosting
[edit]I would feel a lot more confortable about trying your script if it were contained in a page here at Wikipedia where we could get a better look at it. If you take a look at my JS page I have included the code for Pilaf's LivePreview feature from here. The added bonus is that we could add this page to our watchlists and be alerted to any updates automatically. HTH HAND --Phil | Talk July 7, 2005 09:15 (UTC)
- Everyone seems so worried about using BetterHistory! ; ) Well, I actually did think about doing that, but I'm concerned about vandalism. For example, someone could easily add maybe 10 lines that alter the login page to send passwords to a different website (not using XMLHttpRequests, but with GET data in an iframe's url). Even if I fixed it within a day or two, who knows how many accounts could have been stolen from people who used the script. Of course, that's not likely to happen, but it would be my fault if it did. On the other hand, if the page were protected, there wouldn't be much advantage to having it in the wiki at all... The current setup is probably better, because if you do want to see the code, you can look at it, or even cut-and-paste it into your (protected) monobook.js to make sure it doesn't change. I like your idea of watching it, though, so I'm creating a new user page that has the current version number & changelog, updated with each upgrade. -- Colin Hill ⁄ talk ▪ July 7, 2005 12:02 (UTC)
None of these links seem to work
[edit]I can't access any of the external links. Please could you upload the script to wikipedia so that I can play with it? Lupin|talk|popups 02:35, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
Participant alert regarding Wikiproject on Advertising
[edit]The Wikiproject No Ads, created as a backlash against the Answers.com deal, has served an important function in providing a space for users to express their disagreement with the Foundation proposal. While the current controversies about userboxes raise questions about political and social advocacy on Wikipedia, there should be greater flexibility regarding advocacy about Wikipedia in the Wikipedia namespace. Reported and linked by Slashdot and other press sources as a unique and spontaneous occurence in Wikipedia history, it has apparently had some impact as, despite being scheduled to begin in January, not a peep has been heard about the trial and proposed sponsored link since the deal's controversial announcement months ago. Currently, however, there is an attempt to delete the project or move it off Wikipedia altogether. Since the Foundation has provided no additional information and has not attempted to answer the specific questions that participants in the project raised, it is unclear if the Answers.com deal has been abandoned or simply delayed. Until the situation becomes more clear, I believe the group should still have a place in the Wikipedia namespace. Sincerely, Tfine80 00:18, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
