Since Gandalf was a Maia he probably came from the Undying Lands in the first place, so he didn't need special permission to return. Lee M 03:10, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)

• You are correct in your assessment that Gandalf came from the Undying Lands. I don't know of any Tolkien writings that say Wizards couldn't go back or that Gandalf's return was a "special arrangement". I have removed the reference to Gandalf. Eric119 05:17, Mar 21, 2004 (UTC)

• • On the other hand, the rest of the Istari seems to have been banned from return since they fell. Radagast forgot about his mission, Saruman tried to supplant Sauron, and it seems the Ithryn Luin also fell. So in a way Gandalf's case was special. — Jor (Talk) 11:20, 21 Mar 2004 (UTC)
