Merge List of text-based MMORPGs
[edit]The text-based list is a subset of this article. As long as this page is sorted by graphics, the text-based MMORPGs would be grouped together, obviating the need for a separate article. (not watching, please {{ping}}

Status
[edit]The list includes only games that have their own Wikipedia page. Closed games do not have to be removed unless their Wikipedia page has been deleted. Games are considered 'closed' when all the servers have been shut down. The developers sharing the source code online doesn't change that, unless someone else starts up a new official server. All Wikipedia pages about closed games should start with something like '[name] was an MMORPG' (emphasis added) in past tense to make clear we're dealing with a game that is no longer playable on any official server. If servers are limited to a certain continent or country, the status should make that clear.
I've been trying to update a few statuses and templating them to give a better overview with colours. This is what I've come up with so far, but feel free to discuss a better approach:
- {{Active}} if the game is basically playable around the world (with a limited number of geoblocks). This also goes for games that have, say, a 'European' server that can be accessed by players from non-European countries.
- {{No|Closed}} if all of the games' official servers have been shut down permanently.
- {{Partial|[country]}} if the game only has servers accessible by players in that country or those countries (e.g. South Korea). If necessary, use the Notes perimeter to list them all, as the Status perimeter is limited.
- {{table-experimental|Early access}} if the game is still in early access.
- {{Coming soon|Development}} for games that are still in development and that have not yet entered early access, nor have been officially cancelled.
- {{scrapped|Development paused}} for games whose development has been halted, but that have not yet entered early access, nor have been officially cancelled.
- {{scrapped|Scrapped}} for games whose development has been officially cancelled. (These probably won't have Wikipedia pages, unless their development was very hyped and there was a lot of investment).

Empire & State status?
[edit]I don't think Empire & State is still active. I can't even find any evidence of the company still existing past 2011. I've made a similar inquiry on the Novel Inc page. Can anyone confirm that the game is still functional. The site definitely works—albeit barely—which may be a bit deceptive.

- That's certainly unusual. As you said, the official website is online but most of the links are broken—including "Play Now!". The developer's Twitter last tweeted on Apr 27, 2012. I can't find any sources, reliable or otherwise, that say what happened. It's probably fair to mark the game as inactive. Although if we wanted to add anything more, like adding dates, we would really have to track down some sources. Woodroar (talk) 13:54, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
VR updates, CoH updates
[edit]There are now a few VR MMO's - still pretty early, but I think they deserve a mention. Thoughts?
Also, while City of Heroes and City of Villains (same game) are technically shut down, the leakage of the source code, and subsequent legal agreement means the game does live on currently on the Homecoming as well as other rogue servers. I think this needs a mention.
I'll do the work if it's OK, or I can summarize the info here, whatever y'all would prefer. Jgwinner (talk) 22:28, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
